The White House disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the end of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
