An extensive 60-day cruise around the Land Down Under is being halted in the wake of the tragic passing of an elderly female passenger who was abandoned by the ship on a remote coastal location.

Suzanne Rees had been trekking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but broke off from the excursion for a pause. The ship departed without her and returned later that day after the personnel discovered the passenger was missing.

A large-scale hunt located her remains the following day.

Officials are investigating the incident, in coordination with law enforcement and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the shipping company stated that passengers and personnel on the ship were notified that the continuation of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and earlier technical problems".

Through an announcement, he added that guests would be issued a total repayment, and said the organization was working "to arrange the travel back of the passengers via private aircraft".

Authorities also published an revised announcement, and said they had "issued a order to the Master" prohibiting any further travelers from getting on the vessel.

The representative said that they would attend the liner in the port city upon its arrival.

Chronology of Occurrences

The vessel first departed Cairns on October 24th, and was only 48 hours into the voyage at the time of the senior passenger's death. The remote island was the initial destination on the journey.

Passengers on board - who typically pay large sums of money to join the voyage - were ferried there for a daily excursion with the choice of hiking or underwater exploration.

Family Reaction

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "surprised and grieved that the ship left the island after an organised outing without my mum".

In her statement, she portrayed her mother as an "vigorous elderly person" who was a member of a hiking group.

"From the little information we have been told, it appears that there was a breakdown of responsibility and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She added that she hoped the examination would be able to determine what "the operator should have performed that might have saved Mother's existence".

"We understand from the authorities that it was a very hot period, and she took sick on the uphill trek," she stated.

"She was asked her to head down, unescorted. Then the ship sailed away, seemingly without doing a headcount.

"At a certain moment in that process, or soon after, mother succumbed, without company."

Company Reaction

Via official communication, the Chief Executive affirmed that the operator was "working closely with officials to assist their inquiry".

He stated that the organization was "extremely apologetic that this has transpired" and had extended its full support to the loved ones.

Shipping Sector Practices

The liner serves up to one hundred twenty guests with forty-six crew, according to official data. It was purpose-built to enter remote locations of Australia's coast and is outfitted with "small boats" - small boats used to ferry travelers on land visits.

Events of this nature are infrequent, and cruise ships have systems to record which passengers are embarking or leaving, according to industry experts.

Vessel operators consider these processes extremely carefully and have "sophisticated systems in place to avoid such occurrences from happening," the specialist continued.
